Evidence-based design decisions

This new workplace required evidence-based rather than trend-based design decisions. The design process challenged both traditional and early adoptive ABW (activity based working) workplaces addressing the most common issues associated with agile working to date, interpreting and building upon these learnings.

Service heart of the vertical community

Adjacent to the café and support amenity, the concierge hub forms the service heart of the vertical community, providing support for Westpac People from IT help to dry cleaning. The central dark spine provides a social prop to prompt conversations, timber wraps nurture and embrace, providing sense of human scale.

Embracing specialist knowledge

Embracing the mantra to ‘think big don’t act big’, a genuine commitment to human-centred design is evidenced in the breadth and depth of the consultant team which included an ergonomist, nutritionist, wellbeing pattern, landscaper, diversity team, and a dedicated Westpac WorkSMART team.

A vernacular that embraces hospitality

A timeless vernacular that embraces hospitality overtones is evidenced in the client engagement areas where a diverse range of meeting and dining spaces are provided. Organic elements soften and embrace conversations. This is a place where lighting is warm and textural contrasts are high.

Strong visual connectivity

The absence of a central void and atrium made scalability and connectivity critical design imperatives to ensure strong visual connectivity across the vertical communities and linking key destinations.

A sanctuary at work

A sanctuary café is nestled on level three, adjacent to the terrace and wellness area. Here we see timber pods framing semi enclosed spaces for small groups and or individuals to work, socialise or reflect.

Human based space planning

Large floor plates called for intuitive, human based space planning to facilitate instinctive team or individual activities. These large floor plates demanded intelligent, intuitive design to denote more human volume and provide props and behavioural cues around which activities could intuitively nestle (from concentrative to collaborative).

Alternate work settings

The social hub provides alternate work settings for a variety of group sizes. Framed by perimeter portals whose uprights are dipped in a splash of colour, these semi defined spaces  prove tools such as whiteboards,  kitchen table huddles, AV screens, chat lounges and reflective reclining pods.

‘nomadic community’ conversations

These staggered void spaces provided pivotal points around which social hubs and working villages were nestled, demystifying the notion of inter-floor interactions to foster ‘nomadic community’ conversations.

Spaces to think and reflect

Located adjacent to the cafe, the quiet library space is a phone free zone that accommodates alternate working, spaces to think and reflect. Flooded with natural light and greenery, this space is an oasis amongst an energised and bustling community hub.

Holistic health and wellbeing

This design creates a place that supports holistic health and wellbeing by nurturing a broader notion of wellness including financial security, career development, a sense of belonging, nutrition and reflection.
